Memorial Day – We Honor Veterans

Memorial Day is a holiday in tribute of those who have lost their lives while serving in United States Armed Forces. These fallen heroes are honored for their self-sacrifice, courage and determination in defending the rights of U.S. citizens. Memorial Day is also a time to express gratitude to veterans and active duty service members. We look to these patriots to safeguard the ideals of the U.S. Constitution, and protect the future of America’s children.

Origins of Memorial Day

According to the Department of U.S. Veterans Affairs, the precursor to Memorial Day was Decoration Day. This holiday was established in 1868 by the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) shortly after the Civil War, and was a day designated to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Unofficial ceremonies were also held prior to Decoration Day. These gatherings had the common themes of remembrance and gratitude. Many decades after the creation of Decoration Day, the public asked for an official holiday. According to the Department of U.S. Veterans Affairs, in 1971 Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by act of Congress.
