Pick a spot on the Hudson River for largemouth and smallmouth bass. You’ll find them around tributary mouths and where there are pilings and logs in the river. The best time to catch bass is in the summer and fall. For best results, use cut or live herring or minnow imitating plugs.
If you’re looking for trout, fish the Delaware River in the branches below the Pepacton and Cannonsville reservoirs – you’ll catch your share of rainbow and brown trout. While you may catch trout in the summer, you’ll have better luck in the spring when the water is colder.
Lake Champlain will net you lake trout, brown trout, landlocked salmon, yellow perch, smallmouth bass, northern pike and walleye. The Finger Lakes also have brown trout and rainbow trout. If you prefer steelhead trout or Pacific salmon, head over to Lake Ontario.
Other lakes that are top fishing spots include Cayuga Lake for trout, black bass and landlocked salmon; Seneca Lake for northern pike, rainbow trout, brown trout, lake trout and smallmouth bass; Keuka Lake for trout and salmon; and Chautauqua Lake for muskellunge, crappie, panfish and walleye.
