Short and Sweet Hikes in New York

Hiking, to some, evokes the image of walking mile upon mile through rough terrain, an interminable march through the wilderness. If you’re included in that number, then you’ll be pleased to learn that not all trails take a day and a half to complete. You can walk these trails and still have plenty of daylight left over after. Each of these is less than five miles long, so they’re perfectly short and sweet if you want a dose of nature and nothing more. Plus, each of these packs a visual punch of natural beauty. So lace up those hiking boots, spray on your bug repellent, and fill up that water bottle: it’s time to hike.

Auger Falls Trail Loop

Just of NY 30 in Adirondack Park, there’s the lovely little Auger Falls Trail Loop. It’s only 1.2 miles long and doesn’t even require you to retrace your steps (you know, being a loop and all), but it packs a lot of visual splendor into its small frame. The highlight of the hike is the waterfall you see along the way, which tumbles and roars down into a stone-strewn river flanked by emerald green trees.

Hadley Mountain

It’s short, but the rise in elevation that comes with hiking up the small mountain makes it moderately intensive. The entire round trip hike lasts 2.6 miles and the view at the top is wonderful, especially considering that there’s a fire tower that you’re welcome to ascent to give you a real eagle eye view of the surrounding valley.

Nine Corner Lake

The hike around Nine Corner Lake is short but it’s beautiful. Nine Corner Lake is located in the Adirondacks and the trail along it only lasts for 2 miles on a round trip. It’s jam-packed, though, with lake views and waterfalls. It’s a wonderful place to not only hike, but to stop and take a refreshing dip to cool off on a hot summer day.
